MULTI-DAY ELOPEMENT IN CALIFORNIA’S SIERRA FOOTHILLS

Matt and Evelyn’s elopement weekend at Red Smith Ranch in the Sierra Foothills was the kind of intentional, intimate celebration that reminds me why I love filming elopements.

Although I mostly film San Francisco Bay Area weddings, I love to travel for destination-style elopements across California. When Matt and Evelyn told me their elopement weekend would take place at a private vineyard retreat in the Sierra Foothills near the Sierra Nevada mountains, I was all in!

With just 15 of their closest family and friends in attendance, they chose one of my smaller elopement packages with a single videographer and added extra coverage to document their welcome dinner. For couples planning a Bay Area elopement or intimate Northern California wedding, I also offer location suggestions and scouting to help find settings that are scenic yet intimate — something that was especially meaningful for this outdoorsy pair who wanted their ceremony to take place on the ranch’s property but couldn’t figure out an exact spot.

LAID-BACK WELCOME DINNER AT A PRIVATE VINEYARD RETREAT

Their elopement weekend began with a relaxed welcome dinner inside the ranch’s modern rustic house. They invited their guests to make Vietnamese spring rolls together - one of their favorite dishes. It was an easy icebreaker for their loved ones who would be staying together on the private retreat property for the weekend. There were plenty of laughs as spring rolls fell apart mid-assembly, setting a warm, casual tone that carried into the wedding day.

FILMING GUEST MESSAGES FOR A SENTIMENTAL WEDDING FILM

As a story-driven wedding videographer, I tailor each film to reflect what matters most to the couple. For Matt and Evelyn, that meant preserving the presence and voices of the loved ones who traveled to celebrate with them.

After dinner, I recorded each guest sharing heartfelt advice, well wishes, and stories. These heartfelt messages were later delivered as a full toasts edit and thoughtfully woven into their final elopement film — adding a deeply personal layer to their story.

FLOWER-PLANTING UNITY CEREMONY UNDER THE TREES

The ceremony took place on the lawn beside the ranch’s bell tower, framed by California trees and rolling vineyard views. The two adventure seekers exchanged personal vows in front of their circle of guests before inviting everyone to participate in a flower-planting unity ceremony.

Each guest contributed an item — from a gifted planter to potting soil — symbolizing their role in supporting the couple’s marriage. It was a creative and meaningful alternative to traditional unity ceremonies, and one that felt perfectly suited to their intimate Sierra Foothills elopement.

FAMILY STYLE DINNER AT SUNSET

Their guests enjoyed a gourmet family-style dinner on the patio as the sun set over the vineyards. Being true foodies, this outdoorsy couple hired a private chef to ensure an elevated yet relaxed wedding meal.

The newlyweds enjoyed a few toasts. drank local Sierra Foothills wine, and cut their cake before digging into lemon bars baked by Matt’s brother. The golden light, vineyard views, and slow pace of the evening created a cinematic yet grounded ending to their wedding day.

A CINEMATIC YET INTIMATE ELOPEMENT FILM

I loved how Matt and Evelyn’s elopement film turned out. It perfectly balanced the cinematic vineyard landscape and rustic Spanish home architecture with the candid moments that made their celebration uniquely personal.

I hope to document more intentional elopements for outdoorsy couples who value presence, storytelling, and an intimate wedding day experience.

Matt and Evelyn had 4 hours of coverage, 1 videographer, and drone coverage on their day. They added on 2 hours of coverage for their welcome dinner, where we recorded messages and well-wishes from all of their guests.
